Pond aquaculture farming in Kenya (3RKenya-project)

The aquaculture sector is expanding worldwide; motivated by the blue economy and the needs for food and nutrition security to an ever growing population. This trend is still at an early stage in Kenya. One of the aims of a project called 3RKenya is to explore core enabling factors for commercialization of the aquaculture sector in Kenya. The main motivations of pond farming in Kenya are to ensure food and nutritious security, and success has been drawn when costs can be covered by generated income, even without further investments to commercialize. As such, pond farming is the least commercialized segment of the aquaculture sector in Kenya, although this segment has obtained the most subsidies in the past. It is advised that future investors in aquaculture in Kenya should target the most critical enabling factors.
