Описание к видео Fly Fishing for the Hardest Fish to Catch in Freshwater!! (Musky Hunt Ep 7)

In this video I go musky fishing in a small creek with my buddy Scott. We floated a solid 8 miles of water looking for the fish of 10,000 casts. And yeah, all I have to say is musky fishing is hard. That’s it, that’s the intro. Enjoy.

I hadn’t quite said it yet, but I had so much confidence in that hole that I knew if we didn’t see a musky in it then it was going to be a tough day. And as if on cue I Scott hooked up!

Just out of curiosity we measured that fish, and at 33 inches it was a dandy of a creek musky. I’d say anyone would be happy with that fish, especially for a native creek musky, on the fly, and from a kayak. It just doesn’t get much better. Of course now it was my turn, So I started leading the charge down the creek.

Just to set the stage for this next piece of musky action we had been floating for another 3 or more hours, which equaled several miles of creek and a lunch break without a single fish to show for it. And on top of that we were floating through a section of water that is 2 feet deep in most areas. The only reason I’m even recording is because of the new trees that had fallen into the creek, which provided at least some cover.

Yeah I’d rather not talk about it. It’s hard to stay concentrated for hours and hours on end, and when you’re fly fishing for these fish that’s what is required of you. I was guilty of several mistakes in that situation, all of which could have been avoided by simply staying engaged in what I was doing. I’m not even sure I was looking down when that fish ate. Either way after having a musky like that eat and not catching it it’s impossible to not feel sick to your stomach.

At this point I was 100% ready to quit. It’s one of those things where if we weren’t partway through a float I’d just leave to save my mental health. There’s no other fish that does this to me. I mean that one I felt less bad about because I did almost everything right short of a line slip at the beginning of the fight, but that happens from time to time. I believe that’s the first musky I’ve lost this year, which I guess was bound to happen. But with those two musky blunders back to back it felt like I needed to take a break from musky fishing. So I sat down and watched Scott fish a bit, then got rained on pretty bad, and finally after another few hours of fishing and seeing some new water I was refocused.

I mean that’s one of the coolest places I’ve caught a musky. I’m still not sure what that water feature is, other than it’s 100% man made. But catching a musky in a small pocket off the back side of the whitewater was super cool. We measured that fish at 28 inches, so not a giant. But a really cool native creek musky and one I was super happy with given my failures throughout that long day of fishing. I think Scott said it best when he said I had to regress to the mean at some point. Meaning I’ve been having a great musky year, and I’ve caught almost every fish I’ve hooked. So to have a few bad days, which seem to be plaguing my trips recently, is really only regressing to the average of what I should have been doing all along. At least that’s a positive way to look at the failures you experience while fishing for arguably the hardest freshwater fish to catch. Having both of us even catch a musky on this particular day of fishing is a massive win, and I’m looking forward to the next creek musky adventure. Thanks for watching.
