Similarly, before September 11, government officials knew that a surprise attack like Pearl Harbor would make Americans angry and want to go to war. This would give them the perfect excuse to go after their real target - Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

In both cases, the government worked hard to make us believe that the enemy was different from what they really were. During World War II, the government spread false information that Germany was behind the Pearl Harbor attack. And in the years after September 11, the government made us believe that Iraq and Saddam Hussein were behind the attacks.

So, what did we really learn from these two events? We learned that our government may not always tell us the truth and that we should be careful not to believe everything we hear.
