An interview with Jack Grushcow, Founder, President and CEO of Smart Earth Camelina.

Canadian entrepreneur Jack Grushcow was founder and CEO of Consumers Software Inc., one of Canada’s largest software companies. The company was acquired by Microsoft in 1991 in, what was then, the largest transaction of its kind. The technology developed by Consumer Software formed the underpinnings of the Microsoft Mail family of products, including MS Outlook.

With a keen interest in genetics, and seeking a new challenge, Mr. Grushcow familiarized himself with plant biotechnology, breeding and agronomy, and turned his attention to the development of camelina – an oilseed crop he believes has huge potential to benefit Canadian agriculture.

Camelina is perfectly suited for dryland conditions of the Canadian Prairies. Camelina meal is excellent for animal feed and aquaculture, and the oil has anti-inflammatory qualities, with a perfect ratio of Omega 3 and 6. Smart Earth Camelina has been developing this healthy crop for large-scale production. The company is a long-time member of Ag-West Bio and is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
