To enhance my membership team’s skills, I invested in training. Every month, I paid for one of Australia’s best sales consultants to come and work with the team. My intention was right. I wanted my people to be confident, capable, and successful.

But something wasn’t working.

And it started with body language.

I could tell some team members felt the “curriculum” wasn’t relevant to them. They believed they already had these skills. That wasn’t the growth mindset I was hoping for. And it wasn’t because they didn’t care or didn’t want to improve. The problem was that the training was generic.

It was geared to the group, not the individual. The same message for everyone. The same role-plays.The same advice regardless of how each person actually handled an enquiry.

We wanted them to deliver personalised tours, yet we weren’t delivering personalised sales training.

And without real visibility into what was happening, the training had to rely on assumptions.

What I wish I’d had back then was simple.

A report showing exactly what happened when an enquiry came in. What was said. What questions were asked. What opportunities were missed.

If I’d had that, I could have done one of two things.

I could have given that report to the consultant and said, “Coach this person on this specific part of the process.”
Or I could have supported my team in a way that was personal, relevant, and fair.

Instead of training everyone the same, I could have helped each person improve where they actually needed it.

That experience taught me something important: Training without real insight is guesswork. And guesswork is expensive.

That need for insight is why I launched a mystery shopping business that operates exclusively in the fitness industry, so owners can personalise their team’s skills, build confidence, and strengthen loyalty.
