The critical importance of maintaining WWII Bomber formation integrity and not becoming a straggler

Описание к видео The critical importance of maintaining WWII Bomber formation integrity and not becoming a straggler

During 1943 Allied bombers were suffering losses at a high rate. These losses were attributed to either enemy aircraft attacks, ground FLAK or other. In reality, there was a sequence of event that led to a bomber loss. Usually the bomber was knocked out of formation by non-fatal FLAK strikes which led to a bomber falling out of formation. 61% of all bombers shot down were first stragglers. The strike usually required one or more engines to be shutdown. This bomber is now classified as a straggler. The straggler has lost the mutual protection firepower of the formation. Although the bomber is somewhat airworthy, it is very susceptible to fighter attack which is how most met their final loss. Key takeaway of the video, stay in formation at all cost.
