LIVE: UCLA protest - police begin clearing encampment

California law enforcement officers seen moving in on pro-Palestinian protests at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

Violence broke out between pro-Palestinian protesters and a group of counterprotesters at the University of California, Los Angeles, hours after more than 200 activists were arrested at Columbia University in New York.

Police reportedly used tear gas in an attempt to restore order at UCLA after about 100 pro-Israel counterprotesters attempted to disrupt a Gaza solidarity encampment just after 10.50pm on Tuesday, with violence continuing into the early hours of Wednesday. The counterprotesters set off fireworks and irritant gases were released from both sides, according to local news reports.
