Elliott Jaques (1917-2003) was one of the most versatile and most original management thinkers. Yet he is all but forgotten by practicing manager and amongst academics, he remains a sharply polarizing figure. During his long career as a scholar and consultant, he wrote 23 books and several articles in which explored a range of subjects such as- “mid-life crisis”, the structure of social systems, and a comprehensive theory of organizations called Requisite Organization. His consistent and precise approach explains levels of human capability and work in organizations with one interesting concept – the time span of discretion. His ideas have interesting implications for practice in diverse areas such as selection, leadership, organization design, job evaluation, stress, and salary determination.

About the Speaker
Zubin R. Mulla is a Professor at the School of Management and Labour Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. He has a degree in mechanical engineering, followed by a post-graduate diploma in busines management and a doctorate in management. Prior to joining academics in 2005, he worked for seven years in engineering design and management consulting. As a management consultant, he coordinated large scale change management efforts in manufacturing and service organizations. At TISS, he teaches courses on Executive Compensation, Politics in Organizations, and Moral Leadership. His research interests include transformational leadership, values, Indian philosophy, and careers.
