Nan'ao Island is located in Nan'ao County, Shantou City, Guangdong Province, China. It is bordered by Zhelin Bay in the north and the South China Sea in the south. It is located between 116°56′~117°9′ east longitude and 23°24′~23°29′ north latitude. It is a bedrock continental island and an important habitat for Chinese white dolphins. It is known as the "Oriental Hawaii".

Nan'ao Island covers an area of ​​117.73 square kilometers and has a coastline of 94.3 kilometers. It is located at the southern end of the Quanzhou-Shantou seismic belt and has two active faults, the Nan'ao-Changle Fault and the Huanggang Fault. Nan'ao Island is dominated by low mountain erosion hills, with a gourd-like shape. The coast is mostly rocky and steep. The highest peak on the island is Dajianshan (588.1 meters).

Nan'ao Island is the only national AAAA-level tourist attraction in China and the only island in Nan'ao County with residents. Nan'ao Island has always been a must-stop and transit point for trade along China's southeastern coast. It is also the main channel for mainland China's trade with Taiwan and maritime trade, and an important node of the "Maritime Silk Road"
