Enjoy our relaxing tour of the parkland and gardens of Dalemain Mansion in the Lake District of Cumbria, U.K. Dalemain is a country house around five miles south-west of Penrith in Cumbria, England, and is part of the Lake District UNESCO World Heritage Site

This award-winning five-acre plantsman's garden is situated in a landscape of rolling parkland, lakes and rugged Cumbrian hills. The grounds reflect different fashions in gardening over the centuries. This includes the Elizabethan knot garden; the surrounding landscaped parkland with glorious views out to the High Fells; the herbaceous terrace; and the wild garden drawing from the work of William Robinson.

The gardens have many rare plants and over 100 old-fashioned roses. Near the fountain behind the house stands a magnificent Silver Fir Abies Cephalonica which has the largest girth in the UK which had been a gift from Joseph Banks, the botanist, in the 1840s; .

There is evidence of a settlement at Dalemain in Saxon times. The old hall dates back to the 12th century, with wings added in the 16th century. In 1679, Sir Edward Hasell purchased Dalemain and it has remained in the family since then.

In 2013, Dalemain won the Garden of the Year Award sponsored by the Historic Houses Association and Christie's.

Dalemain’s owners, Robert and Jane Hasell-McCosh, decided not to hire a head gardener but to manage it themselves. Robert's mother, Sylvia McCosh, was a renowned plantswoman.

This area is bordered by Dacre Beck, a small river, with the rugged fells beyond. In the Lake District, the word "fell" originally referred to an area of uncultivated high ground used as common grazing usually on common land.
