SJ8 Plus REVIEW

The price you will pay for the combo with accessories is LESS than 200 USD (right now around $170!), 50 less than the Pro model and 100 dollars more than the air model.

The build quality is no different to the SJ8 Pro. It is all-plastic body, the material feels premium. You may think it catches a lot of fingerprints, but I can promise this is not the case. There are two displays. The main one is 2.33 inch touch screen. And in my opinion it is the best actioncam display ever. Visible under almost any kind of light, and the touch responds very well too. And it is the same for each of this year’s SJ8 models. SJCAM did a great job with distribution of the menus. I’ve always praised Gopro Hero 6 because of the easiness of operation. SJCAM’s menus are getting quite close, and switching between shooting modes happens within seconds, even if you want to adjust a lot of settings. Quite interestingly, I find the menus here better organized than on the pro model. With the plus I didn’t notice inconsistencies with typos, or capital letters. The user experience is superb. And it has the potential to become my primary camera if this kind of performance is consistent.
Specwise SJCAM play it safe here: a new chipset – NT96683, a long awaited model which probably will appear on many other models. Supports maximum resolution of 4k at 30fps with EIS, and supports h.265 encoding. It does both brilliantly!! the lens is the same as in the pro – 170degree wide angle 7-layered glass, and the image is processed by the ultra-popular Sony IMX117.

From all the three models, the SJ8 Plus is the battery life champion! It may last up to 100 minutes at 4k recording when wifi and screen are off, which equals the achievement of Gopro Hero 6.

Shooting with the cam is easy and fun. Even without a gimbal you will get decent footage with excellent stabilization. It is supposed to be slightly worse than the pro model – here we have 3-axis gyro, while it is 6-axis for the more expensive model.
Usual thing for action cameras is to get decent footage in daylight. Crisp picture, lot of detal, good dynamic range – it does the job well!

Should you film in darker areas – things are getting worse. Of course – small aperture means less light reaching the sensor, and the footage will lack the good quality that it has in daylight. I noticed that too bright objects will hinder the sensor capabilities for displaying surrounding objects and details.

There are in total 9 different shooting modes, and each of them is two taps and one slide away from you. Dedicated car mode is available – and for such a wonderful camera this will be a wasteful kind usage. Time lapse, slow video, burs, still photos – it is all there.

Is there anything bad I can say about the SJ8 plus? Not right now. I think this model is a keeper. It does everything you’d wish an action camera to be capable of in 2018, even much more than what a normal user would wish for. And it entirely justifies its price-tag of around 200 dollars with accessories.
