Celebrating One Year! | EP 6: Clownfish Harem Tank

http://brs.li/120clowntank It's been one year since we first set-up the clownfish harem tank, and our strategy of heavy feedings, lots of habitat and a large number of clowns has worked really well at dispersing aggression and keeping everyone healthy.

We did notice one clown that was getting singled out and picked on, which interestingly was the only clown left with an orange face. Once we removed the orange-faced fish (now safely in a new tank), the harem tank became more evenly aggressive among all of the clowns with quite a bit of fighting for a few weeks. Thankfully, it was nothing serious but there were a lot of nipped fins.

Of course there are still nipped fins and squabbles, but we still have 28 clowns in the tank, minus the one we lost shortly after setting it up and the one that has moved to the new tank.

Chad has since taken over the front desk and is the primary caretaker of the harem tank and like any reefer, he had a few things he wanted to try on the tank. First off, he cut the feedings back to 4 times a day, siphoned the sand, added some diamond back sand-sifting gobies, and an urchin all to decrease the amount of algae in the tank.

He also added a giant bubble tip in the center of the tank which is prime real estate for the clowns!

We also switched out the Kessil A150 with a Kessil H350 made especially for horticulture in the fuge. It definitely seems to be producing some impressive growth. We have plans in the future to test lights head to head in a controlled environment to find out definitively if one grows chaeto better than the other.
