In this Sweat, Lead & Steel, we spotlight SCCY Firearms, the brand known for its low cost, highly-vibrant spectrum of multi-colored compact pistols. After discovering what he deemed to be a significant gap in the firearms marketplace for cost-effective, high quality carry guns, Founder and CEO, Joe Roebuck, set out to determine if his production savvy and skill at manufacturing high-volume, quality products could satisfy the massive need, noting, “My mission is to make an affordable gun and put it in everybody’s pocket. By far, this gun project has tested my skills.”

Roebuck always possessed a passion for design and building. As a youngster, between the ages of 4 and 5 years old, he was already showing a penchant for inventing. He seemed to persistently take everything he could get his hands on around the household apart, deconstructing all manner of appliances and toys, just so he could see if he could put them back together again. Young Roebuck convinced his father that he truly wanted to be an inventor and engineer. Recognizing his young son’s persistently inquisitive nature and knack for inventing at around 8 years old, his father encouraged his curiosity and provided assistance and advice, telling him “Learn the tool and die trade if you’re serious about inventing.” So, Joe took the deep-dive into learning the tool and die trade, which he accredits as the crux of his success. Flash-forward to 1997, Joe earned a track record of success in manufacturing and owned a Metal Injection Molding company. Having developed an affinity and fascination with firearms manufacturing, Joe did his research into the aforementioned gaps in the marketplace, and learned that in an industry filled with seasoned titans, there was still room for a mid-tier, high-quality, affordable pistol to break into the space. In his own words, “Design...it’s all about imagination. To me, everything as an inventor is possible and there’s no such thing as ‘There’s no more room for inventing’.”

Launching SCCY Firearms with the production of the CPX-1, Joe and his team developed custom tooling to drastically increase production line efficiency, making the slide component of the firearm in only 2 steps of machining versus the traditional industry standard 6-step process. Having tackled a key hurdle in keeping cost down, Roebuck invested millions of his own hard-earned money in the highest quality machining and operational hardware available. The standout game changer perhaps for SCCY however came not in the design and engineering departments, but from Roebuck’s wild and unorthodox approach for an industry that had long-thrived on monochromatic, uniform color schemes when it came to virtually all production-run guns on the market. He produced them in vivid color. Virtually every color in the rainbow to be exact. Having a flare for marketing and understanding another underserved market space for shooters in the female demographic and those seeking a standout in their sidearm, something that could pair nicely with their favorite outfit or handbag. Joe developed a number of vibrant and durable colors such as Crimson, Lime Green, Pink, Purple, Orange, and of course, SCCY Blue. Naturally, options like Black and FDE are available for those purists seeking the more mundane and traditional color options.

The equation of numerous color options, a low-cost pricepoint, and extremely high-quality industry standards had earned SCCY a place at the table. Over the years, the CPX has evolved 4 times over with the releases of the CPX-2, CPX-3, and CPX-4, and now, in 2021...SCCY’s next pistol in the lineup has been announced with the DVG, or “David Versus Goliath. The moniker of this new pistol is literally Roebuck’ way of making a statement to the Big Boys in the industry that SCCY is here to stay and isn’t afraid to put up a fight and go toe-to-toe for their share of the spoils. Cut to the 2020-2021 buying frenzy, and the SCCY production line has been running 24 hours a day, in three shifts, and SCCY is shipping 800-1000 units a day, 5 days a week, for the last 7 months. The brand attributes much of it’s success to it’s self-contained nature, with approximately 95% of the components and tooling required to produce SCCY’s firearms being manufactured and owned in house. When asked what drives him and his brand to produce firearms in this fashion versus simply charging more in a year when product is flying off shelves across the nation regardless of cost or quality, Roebuck had this to say...“SCCY is the presence of talent and technology with the absence of greed.”

Throughout this colorful episode of Sweat, Lead & Steel we explore more of that innovative thinking and the audience is treated to a peek behind the curtain at the cutting-edge SCCY manufacturing facilities along with insight and introspection during sit-down interviews with key players behind the brand.
