Excerpt from The Defense is Ready: Life in the Trenches of Criminal Law by Leslie Abramson:

Jose moves toward Erik. Erik tries to climb over his desk to get to the door. Jose catches him, throws him onto the bed, but then Jose loses his balance. Erik runs out the door, across a balcony, down the stairs and into the den. Hysterical and crying, he is trying to get to the guest house, where he assumes he'll find Lyle. He runs into his mother, who's in the den, apparently drunk as she often is.

"What's the matter with you?"

"Nothing, nothing. You wouldn't understand." "Oh, I know. I've always known. What do you think, I'm stupid?"

Erik is stunned. "I always thought," he explained in testimony, "I was helping her by not telling her and protecting her by not telling her, and now she was saying she knew what was going on and I just felt this sense of anguish and rage and shock, hate."

Erik starts to run again, out toward the pool. Kitty is racing after him, yelling, "Get back here, you bastard!" He makes it into the guest house, with Kitty close behind. He tells Lyle, "She knows, she knows everything."
