Haikou, also known as "Coconut City", is the capital of Hainan Province, an international comprehensive transportation hub city, a strategic pivot city of the national "One Belt and One Road" strategy, and a core city of Hainan Free Trade Port. It is located at 19°31′~20°04′ north latitude and 110° east longitude. Between 07'~110°42', it is located in the northern part of Hainan Island, adjacent to Wenchang to the east, Chengmai to the west, Ding'an to the south, and Qiongzhou Strait to the north. Since the opening of the port in the Northern Song Dynasty, it has a history of thousands of years. Haikou was established as a city on December 9, 1926 and liberated on April 23, 1950. On April 13, 1988, Hainan established a provincial special economic zone.
Haikou is composed of the main island Hainan Island (parts), outlying islands Haidian Island, and Xinbu Island. The total area of ​​the city is 3145.93 square kilometers, of which the land area is 2284.49 square kilometers and the sea area is 861.44 square kilometers. Haikou has a pleasant climate and first-class ecological environment. It ranks first in the air quality rankings of 168 cities at prefecture level and above issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China. The city’s green coverage rate is 43.5%, and it is selected by the World Health Organization. It is China's first "World Healthy City" pilot site. As of 2020, the city has a permanent population of 2.8734 million, and the Hokkien dialect is spoken in Hainan dialect.
