Fuji XT4 Wedding | Styled Shoot at Gracewood Estates, Kurtz Orchards, Niagara ON

Toronto Wedding Planner Beth Jacobs invited us to film her styled shoot with an A-Team of vendors (see below). We had the opportunity to film at the Gracewood Estates, Kurtz Orchards in Niagara ON. It's one of our favourite wedding venues in Ontario, surrounded by nature, vineyards, orchards and a beautiful old house with plenty of rustic vibes. We thought this shoot would be the perfect opportunity to test out the Fuji XT4.

What can we say? There are plenty of reviews online, so we won't go into details, more just an overall impression of our experience. It's feels good in the hand, lightweight but solid. We love the top dials and the general ergonomics. It just kinda feels like a "real" photographers' camera (if that makes sense). Most of all, the image that comes out of the xt4 is beautiful. We filmed this with the Eterna profile, which is very easy to grade and only take a few tweaks to get looking really nice. We just started shooting with the HLG profile......wow, just blown away. 10 bit 4K 60p internal, 14 stops of dynamic range and stunning colours. The fact that you can get this from the $999 Xt3 as well is incredible.

As far as shortcomings go, the 1.77 crop in 60p is a bit annoying, but not that big a deal. It's a little frustrating when filming at the wide end. The ibis is OK-ish (we actually used a monopod for a lot of the static shots here) but definitely usable in a pinch. It's mostly frustrating when adding movement to a shot - you can't quite trust it in the same way as you can with the GH5. Autofocus is mostly great, but it does go on a hunt once in a while. Just like the ibis, it's a limitation that you just need to be aware of when shooting. Then there's the overheating, which does make us nervous. However, we also have two GH5s, which would be our A cams for ceremonies and speeches.

Obviously the Sony A7s3 is the camera of the moment, and we're excited to try that out. It looks like a beast of a camera, but we have the say, we're really happy with what we get from the xt4. When used well, the image is truly magical. Should we switch or not? The XT4 definitely has compromises while the Sony ticks literally every box - but at a cost. For us, what we think makes sense is to run with 2 XT4s and 2 Panasonic GH5s. The cost comes out cheaper than buying 2 A7s3's with a new set of lenses - and we end up with a 4 camera kit. We'd count on the GH5's for their reliability for ceremonies and speeches (and the sync scan feature - which has bailed us out on more shoots that we could have imagined!) and the Xt4's for creative/beauty shots.

But who knows......2020 has been an insane year for cameras and we never know what's around the corner!
