Many women write to us asking about issues with their mother-in-law and how it causing problems in their marriages. That she is ruining or interfering in their marriage or has already destroyed it. Paul explains why this happens and what to do about it.

The truth is most of the people who say that are women but there are some men too so we need to understand this first, and then I'm going to give you a beautifully elegant solution
and it's wrapped around a philosophy that I have wrapped the entire Marriage Foundation around. It's very positive, it's based on unconditional love.

Why? This is not so hard, is it?

There is a competition -- the competition is based on the fact that the mother-in-law is not letting go of her precious. And so, the person who is trying to steal the love of her life, her child is a threat. And so, she's pillow talking your spouse making problems talking about how you're not doing a great job with the kids, you don't cook well, you don't provide well whatever it is. It manifests in a billion different ways but that's the bottom line problem
unless of course, you're like a hooked on gambling, a gambling addict or a drug addict, or carousing or something in which case maybe the mother-in-law should be making trouble in your marriage but those are rare cases and those people don't write into me.

I never hear from a man who's saying, "I go to strip clubs, I don't know what's wrong with my
mother-in-law. She seems to complain a lot." We don't get those kinds of emails.

So, what do you do about it?

There are two parts to this. One part is about your mother-in-law, you cannot fix her, you cannot fix the relationship between you. All you can do is behave as well as you can under the circumstances that's the best you can do. However, the area where you can do the most good is the area where you should be doing the most good anyway, and here's how that works.

So let's take a look at why men seek women for marriage?
What is the psychophysiological the driving force that is compelling
a man to look for a wife?

And you can come up with a bunch of answers but I'm going to give you like the daddy of all answers and that is that a man who is mostly closed off with his heart naturally by nature is seeking the unconditional love that he received from his mother. Wow, that's very insightful if you think about it because that way it explains how she has an advantage over
you because from his point of view. If you're the wife from his point of view you're not living up to the billing of being a wife because you're not reproducing that which he sought and
seeks to this day which is unconditional love which just happens to be.
