Stories are as old as the human race, and they’re what make us human, Martien Halvorson-Taylor explains during the 2022 Festival of Faiths session Lessons of Old Stories in a New Context .

Sacred narratives in particular can foster deep insights and re-invigorate our perspectives, behaviors and values as human beings. "Sacred Stories are different because they have the power to hold us, to shape the sense of our own lives, to frame our fears and inspire our ultimate hopes,” she says.

Halvorson-Taylor is a scholar of the literature, religions and history of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and the Second Temple period. Since 2004, she has taught at the University of Virginia, where she co-directs the Religion, Race and Democracy Lab.
