Kanheri Caves | Buddhist Caves in Mumbai | Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Kanheri caves are 2000 years old Buddhist caves located in the heart of Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali east, easily accessible from Borivali by bus, auto, taxi, metro. These 109 basalt rock cut caves are adorned with Buddhist sculptures, cravings, paintings and inscriptions dating back to the 1st century C.E. There are viharas, stupas and chaitya halls which demonstrate the well organized establishment of Buddhist monks. There are also water tanks which were used to store rain water that depict their well planned water storage system. If you are an ardent admirer of Architecture, there is much to explore for you. Best time to visit should be the winters, but it's more scenic during monsoons.
