Sunshine Mine Fire Disaster

On May 2 1972, Shoshone county was host to one of the worst mining disasters in modern history. A fire would break out in the Sunshine Mine near Kellogg Idaho during day shift. The surprise inferno would compound with ventilation issues and toxic construction materials, rapidly filling the mine with poisonous levels of carbon monoxide. The rescue efforts over the following 11 days brought both national assistance and attention to the tragedy in the Coeur D’alenes seeing 91 men out of the 173 man shift perish underground, forever changing the lives of their families, the surrounding towns, and the mining industry as a whole.
