So, welcome to Voltri. You might be hearing this name for the first time — and that’s okay! Even some Italians still think it’s a separate town. But in reality, it’s the western edge of Genoa — a seaside neighborhood with the soul of a village and the heart of a port city. And the moment you breathe in that sea air, you understand: this isn’t just a district, it’s practically a tiny republic with a mind of its own.
A Bit of History — Just Enough to Sound Smart:
Voltri is a place steeped in history that goes all the way back to ancient times. During the Roman era, it was known as Vulturia, possibly from the Latin vultur, meaning “vulture.” Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean flocks of birds were circling over tourists — it was probably about strategic elevation or rugged terrain. Or maybe the Romans just ran out of pretty names and said, “Let’s call it Vulturia. If someone’s got a problem, write to the Senate!”
Later, Voltri became known as a hub for trade, agriculture, and — of course — olive oil. Even today, you can find old olive presses that have been grinding for centuries, producing oil so fragrant it could probably lead tours around Liguria all by itself.
The Architecture & Strolling Around:
As you walk through the streets of Voltri, time seems to slow down. This is the old heart of Italy: narrow alleyways, laundry hanging between buildings, grandmas whispering to each other on church benches, and the smell of focaccia calling you like the Sirens did to Odysseus. Only instead of crashing your ship, you walk straight into the bakery.
