In this video, I will take you on a drive along one of China's longest urban ring expressways—the Shanghai S20 Outer Ring Expressway.

The Outer Ring Expressway (designated as Shanghai Provincial Expressway S20) is a provincial-level ring expressway in Shanghai, China. Originally named Shanghai A20 Highway, it spans 94.7 kilometers and features an eight-lane dual carriageway design with a speed limit of 80 km/h. Construction began in July 1997, and the entire route opened to traffic in 2003. Starting and ending at the Outer Ring Tongji Road Interchange in Baoshan District, it is managed by the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission.

The Outer Ring intersects with almost all radial expressways in Shanghai (such as G2 Beijing-Shanghai, G15 Shenyang-Haikou, and G60 Shanghai-Kunming), forming numerous massive and maze-like interchanges.

A key component of the Outer Ring Expressway is the Outer Ring Tunnel. As China’s first extra-large river-crossing tunnel constructed using the immersed tube method, it opened in 2003 and handles nearly 70% of container truck river-crossing traffic in northern Shanghai. In March 2025, after a major renovation, the tunnel reopened with an increased speed limit of 60 km/h. It also now features an intelligent traffic management platform, dynamic weighing detection equipment, and separate lanes for passenger and freight vehicles, significantly improving traffic efficiency and safety.

Furthermore, by coordinating with tunnels such as the Suburban Ring Tunnel, the Outer Ring Expressway has helped establish a multi-channel river-crossing network in northern Shanghai, contributing to the diversion of freight traffic and alleviating pressure on the overall road network.
