Lots of us have slopes in our yards and it can really be challenging to keep the soil or mulch from washing away with the rain.

This slope is being managed by creeping juniper. Other good options include creeping phlox, vinca minor (also called myrtle or periwinkle), mondo grass, lilyturf (liriope). There’s also pachysandra but be careful about it totally taking over. That can be a good thing if you’ve got an area you want coverage for quickly.

Another way to handle slopes is with retaining walls. I use stone a lot, especially around shrubs to make sure they are bolstered, and then ground-cover plants in other areas.

Note: building a wall for a steep area can be strenuous and may require a lot of materials. If you’re going to take on a project like that make sure to research how to do it so you don’t waste your time or money. Or hurt yourself! Sometimes the pros need to be brought in.

The most practical way to manage water consistently running down an area is to divert it toward good drainage, like with some rocks.
