Arunachal Pradesh: It is derived from the Sanskrit word Aruna (Sun rising), thereby making it sun rising land. However, there are few who translate it to “Dawn lit mountains”
Assam: The name derived from AHOMS, the ruler of Assam.
Andhra Pradesh: The Southern Province.
Bihar: Drived from the word Vihar which (A place of learning).
Goa: It is believed that the name originated from the Sanskrit word ‘go’ which means Cow.
Gujarat: Derived from Gujara dynasty.
Jharkhand: Derived from the Sanskrit word Jhar (forest), and Khand (land). So, in total, it is said as Land of the Forest.
Karnataka: Derived from Karu(Lofty) and Naad means (Land) which refers to the Deccan Plateau.
Kashmir, if literally translated, means land desiccated from water: “Ka” (the water) and shimeera (to desiccate). Also, some historians say, that Kashmir is derived from the famous saint Rishi Kashyap. It became Kashyap - mir and finally Kashmir.
Kerala: In Sanskrit keralam word means as the land added on. Also, some historians say that the name came from the word ‘Kera’(coconut tree).
Maharashtra: It was first mentioned in the 7th century by a Chinese traveller Huan Tsang. Maha means great, and Rakshtrika means Ratta, the tribe/dynasty of pretty chiefs that ruled the Deccan region.
Manipur: Derived from the Sanskrit word “Mani” (The land of Jewels).
Mizoram: Derived from ‘Mi’ (people) and ‘zo’(highlander).
Nagaland: Originated from the Burmese word ‘Naka’ i.e. Naga which means people with earrings or pierced noses.
Odisha: Derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Odra Vishaya’ or ‘Odra Desa’.
Sikkim: Originated from Limbu origin in which ‘Su’ means new and ‘Khyim’ means palace i.e. New Palace.
Telangana: Derived from the word ‘Trilinga’(Three Shiva Lingas).
Tripura: Derived from two Kokborok words – TUI(water) and PRA (near).
West Bengal: Derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Vanga’. And different versions came after it in Persia it is called Bangalah, in Hindi as Bangal and in Bengali as Bangla.
