The Piaget Polo S Automatic was the most controversial sports watch of 2016. Alternately compared to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut, and the Patek Philippe Nautilus, the Polo S was forced to reckon with rivals costing multiples of its retail price.

With blue dial, the stainless steel Piaget Polo S offers a budget conscious alternative to the Patek Philippe 5711; the Piaget costs almost one third the price of its high horology non-rival. At 42mm, Piaget's sports watch is size competitive with Patek and Audemars watches that define this segment, but at under $10,000 US, the Piaget offers undeniable value.

Inside its brushed and polished stainless steel case, the Piaget caliber 1110P automatic movement borrows most of its running gear from the Cartier caliber MC 1904. Twin mainspring barrels, a 50-hour power reserve, stop seconds (hacking), and a quickset date. Al bridges, plates, and winding rotor have been decorated with custom Piaget brand finish. The movement can be viewed through a sapphire display casebook.

Piaget fits a stainless steel bracelet with double deploying clasp. The folding clasp includes twin triggers for security agains accidental release. Removable bracelet links are fixed in place with pins. Each Piaget Polo S Automatic is water resistant to 100 meters.

Several dials are available with the Piaget Polo S, but this example includes a striking metallic blue that likely constitutes the most attractive option. All hour indices are appliqués, and the hands at center are rhodium plated and polished with an alpha profile. The date at six o'clock anchors the dial.

The Piaget Polo S (G0A41002) features a 42mm stainless steel case surrounding a blue dial on a stainless steel bracelet with folding buckle. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds and date. The watch also measures 9.4mm in thickness and 46.8mm from lug-to-lug.
