How Spring Mechanism Works in Circuit Breakers | Simple & Reliable Operation Explained

In this video, we are going to discuss the spring operating mechanism of circuit breakers. In the video, we have explained how the circuit breaker spring mechanism works. We have also explained why it is so popular, and why.

In the spring mechanism, there are two springs. One is a bigger spring. The other is smaller. The bigger spring is called the closing spring. Its duty is to close the circuit breaker. It also provides the required potential energy for charging the tripping spring.

Whenever the motor supply is switched on, the closing spring gets charged. We have discussed here the motorized spring mechanism of the circuit breaker. The manual spring mechanism of the circuit breaker is theoretically the same. Its working principle is also the same. It is identical to the motorized spring mechanism. The only difference is in charging. In manual type, a handle is rotated by hand to charge the closing spring — nothing else. In the motorized mechanism, the motor does the same job.

When the closing spring is fully charged, it stores potential energy. When the closing command is given that means when we give the closing command the stored potential energy is released. This means the spring gets discharged. Due to this sudden release of potential energy or sudden deformation of the spring the cam attached to the closing spring rotates.
This cam is connected via a lever and gear arrangement to the moving contact of the circuit breaker. As a result, the moving contact moves towards the fixed contact. This closes the circuit breaker.

During the discharging of the closing spring, some quantity of potential energy is used for closing the circuit breaker. The rest of the energy is utilized to compress the tripping spring (or opening spring). Thus, the circuit breaker gets ready for the next opening operation.
