Ne irascaris Domine - Byrd - Tenebrae conducted by Nigel Short

Описание к видео Ne irascaris Domine - Byrd - Tenebrae conducted by Nigel Short

2023 marks 400 years since the death of William Byrd, one of the most celebrated composers of the English Renaissance. Byrd was a Catholic living in England at a time when it was strictly forbidden to practise the Catholic faith, but he managed to escape the worst of the persecution by finding favour with Queen Elizabeth I. Many of his sacred works - including this one - are seen to be veiled references to England's abandonment of Catholicism, and the pain this caused to Byrd and his fellow Catholics.

'Ne irascaris Domine' ('Be not angry, Lord') is the first part of a double motet, the second section of which is called 'Civitas sancti tui' ('Your holy city').

Recorded in St Augustine, Kilburn by kind permission of the Vicar & Churchwardens.
Produced by Jonathan Coates.
