US president Donald Trump and Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese meet at the White House. The future of the multi-billion-pound Aukus submarine pact between the UK, the US and Australia is expected to be centre stage when Australia’s prime minister holds his formal meeting with President Trump later on Monday.

The deal by which the US will supply Australia with three nuclear-powered submarines and make available its propulsion and combat technologies for a fleet of new British-designed submarines has been under a cloud since the Trump administration launched a review of the deal.

Ahead of his meeting in Washington, Anthony Albanese, the prime minister, was preparing a case for the US to stand by the Aukus pact by offering inducements including guaranteeing the US access to Australia’s critical minerals needed for modern military and green energy products.

The importance of Australia’s offer has vastly increased since China made clear its intent to block its own supplies of critical minerals to the West. Ten days ago Beijing slapped fresh export controls on rare earths and other materials critical for advanced tech manufacturing.

China processes about 90 per cent of the world’s rare earths, which go into everything from solar panels to smartphones.
