TONSILS are lymphoid glands located in your THROAT. They provide IMMUNITY against BACTERIAL INFECTION, VIRAL INFECTION, and other harmful entities that may enter in a child's mouth. These play an important role in providing IMMUNITY to a certain age, and after that age, their role starts declining. If these glands get attacked by BACTERIA or VIRUS. They become inflamed and infected, which is called TONSILLITIS. TONSILLITIS can be acute TONSILLITIS, chronic TONSILLITIS or recurrent TONSILLITIS, and exaudative TONSILLITIS, in which tonsils get filled with pus and if not treated properly it can not only affect your heart , kidneys and may cause sepsis putting patients life in danger.

Chronic TONSILLITIS may cause constant PAIN IN THROAT, FEVER , COUGH , IRRITABILITY , ABDOMINAL PAIN etc which may force child not to eat food properly and ultimately results in NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY , POOR ACADEMIC RESULTS, LOW FOCUS etc.

Mostly, VIRAL TONSILLITIS can be managed by taking some PAINKILLERS, GARGLES , KEEPING ONESELF HYDRATED. While BACTERIAL TONSILLITIS needs proper ANTIBIOTICS to treat it. But if TONSILLITIS becomes Recurrent. it can disturb the overall quality of the quality of the patient.

there is a criterion for tonsillectomy ( TONSIL SURGERY).

7 or more TONSILLITIS episodes in one year
5 or more TONSILLITIS episodes in two consecutive years
3 or more TONSILLITIS episodes in 3 consecutive years.

Some others are KISSING TONSILS , in which tonsils swelled so much that they block the way to breathe or eat , QUINSY , a condition in which PUSS gets filled in PERITONSILAR SPACE.
and multiple TONSILLAR STONES.

All these conditions may indicate to get the tonsils removed. while most acute and some chronic infections may get settled down with some medicines and hydration.
