Is Mothership's SG60 series anti-Malaysian propaganda?

This video takes a critical look at the #MothershipSG60 Instagram posts (my Instagram is @victortanws - follow me there!) that surfaced ahead of Singapore’s Diamond Jubilee. While Mothership is known for creating viral, shareable content, this series of historical narratives raises deeper questions. Are we witnessing genuine historical education, or is this an attempt to construct a national identity by contrasting Singapore’s progress with Malaysia’s perceived failures?

From Lee Kuan Yew’s final speech in the Malaysian Parliament to references to Mahathir Mohamad, UMNO, and the DAP’s origins, the posts lean heavily into emotionally charged moments of separation and racial politics. But by framing Malaysia as unstable, backward, and race-obsessed—while portraying Singapore as calm, meritocratic, and progressive—does the narrative veer into selective history, weaponized for national sentiment?

We explore the concept of propaganda, the role of media like Mothership, the relevance of the Foreign Interference Countermeasures Act (FICA), and consider the words of Vivian Balakrishnan and K Shanmugam. In doing so, we ask: is this really just history—or narrative warfare?
