Hey Everyone and welcome to High School 101. Today we will learn about graduation requirements and credits for the Granite School District.

Graduation requirements are a set of essential classes that all students must take to receive a high school diploma.

Granite School District requires students to earn 27 credits to graduate high school.

Let’s define what a credit is. Each time you pass a class, you earn credit toward graduation. For example, passing a full-year class, like English, in high school gives you one full credit, and passing a half-year or semester class, like Health, earns you half a credit or .5 credits.

Credits typically begin to accrue in 9th grade. However, students may earn high school credit as early as junior high school by taking certain classes at school, like world language courses or advanced math courses, like Secondary Math 1. There are other ways to earn high school credit like taking high school classes online through approved providers.

To graduate from a Granite School District high school, you’ll need to earn at least 27 credits. But it’s important to know which classes you’ll need to take, because it’s not just any 27 credits.

Let’s review Granite School District’s graduation requirements.
You’ll need:
4 credits in English
3 credits in Math
3 credits in Science
3.5 credits in Social Studies
Aside from these core subjects, you’ll need a few other things to graduate, like:
1 credit in Career and Technical Education (CTE)
.5 credits in Digital Studies
1.5 credits in Fine Arts
.5 credits in Financial Literacy
.5 credits in Health
1.5 credits in PE
0.5 credits in Health
And then, the rest of the 8 credits will be electives—those are classes you get to choose based on your interests.
Additionally, Students who choose to take Seminary, an off-campus religious course offered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, do not count toward high school credit.
The Granite School District recommends when to take certain courses by grade. A large part of the planning happens between you, your family, and your school counselor. It’s important to start talking about your high school, college, and career readiness plan now.
