In order to give constructive criticism that people will take action on, the most important technique to use is to depersonalize it. By critiquing the action rather than the person, it creates an opportunity for everyone to learn from a mistake without anyone feeling attacked.

We need to accept that change is inevitable. If we are resistant to change, we need to ask ourselves why, and if our resistance is valid.

To be seen by our peers as a leader, we need to be able to cajole them because we do not have automatic authority. When we display passion and a desire to get from A to B, we will naturally stand out from others.

As leaders, we need to be sensitive to the dynamics of our team and insert ourselves in an effective way. The most difficult dynamics are those with our peers, and we need to be able to explain the mistake our peers have made without making it confrontational and personal. To be a really good leader of our peers, we’ve got to be able to convince them to do what it is that we want, in a way that they’re going to agree to.
