Описание к видео What Business Can Learn from Fighter Pilots - Paco Chierici

Being a leader amongst peers can be a challenge, particularly with peers who are of the same age and experience level as you are. Leading a team of pilots means balancing everyone’s egos with the shared common goal of wanting to excel. How can we give criticism in an effective way? How can we manage and understand opposition to change? How can we stand out as a leader to our peers? In this episode Paco Chieri explains how we can be a better leader to our peers and what pilots need to be learning in the age of technology.

If people saw how people with big egos teach each other and review each other, a lot of CEOs could learn a lot in building their teams. -Craig Picken

Takeaways + Tactics

In order to give constructive criticism that people will take action on, the most important technique to use is to depersonalize it. By critiquing the action rather than the person, it creates an opportunity for everyone to learn from a mistake without anyone feeling attacked.

We need to accept that change is inevitable. If we are resistant to change, we need to ask ourselves why, and if our resistance is valid.

To be seen by our peers as a leader, we need to be able to cajole them because we do not have automatic authority. When we display passion and a desire to get from A to B, we will naturally stand out from others.
On this episode Paco Chierici discusses what we need to do in order to lead a team of our peers effectively. He also explains the positive and negative roles that technology currently plays, and how this affects pilots’ careers moving forward.

We also discussed:

How depersonalizing criticism is effective
Accepting change for the right reasons
How to stand out as a leader amongst peers

As leaders, we need to be sensitive to the dynamics of our team and insert ourselves in an effective way. The most difficult dynamics are those with our peers, and we need to be able to explain the mistake our peers have made without making it confrontational and personal. To be a really good leader of our peers, we’ve got to be able to convince them to do what it is that we want, in a way that they’re going to agree to.
