Compassionate and Understanding Care for Victims of Human Trafficking

Dignity Health is the largest hospital system in California and has undergone a huge initiative to train its providers on human trafficking, creating protocols for identification and potential intervention. Part of this initiative includes the development of a sustainable and highly successful medical home/safe haven, created within a family medicine residency program in Sacramento, CA. At this clinic, human trafficking victims, survivors, and their children receive full scope victim-centered, trauma-informed care by attending and resident physicians extensively trained on the issue, working closely with community organizations, and using best practices developed over the last 3 years of operation. It is a model that trains the physicians of tomorrow in an easily replicated model that is synergistic in physician education, patient care, and minimizes increases in utilization to care for this patient population.
