With the dynamic range of today's cameras, the ability of Adobe Camera RAW to extract so many details out of a file, and the practice of combining bracketed exposure in software, graduated neutral density filters are not a popular as the used to be. However, I believe they still can be useful and should be a part of the landscape photographer's kit...especially if you are shooting slide film.

When shooting digital, using GNDs is pretty straightforward. Simply stop down and use live view or the viewfinder to place the transition of your GND. Large format is a bit more difficult. Due to the focal length of the lenses being used and the size of the film, even hard edge transitions are difficult to see on the ground glass. That's why in my filter kit, I have a piece of card stock cut to the size of my GND filters. It is much easier to see the edge of the card. I simply place it at my horizon line, and then slide my filter in and place the transition at the edge of the card. It's a very simple, yet effective method.
