Guwahati: Thousands of devotees thronged Ganesh temples across the city on Saturday to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, despite the scorching heat. The 40-ft tall idol of Lord Ganesh at Guwahati’s Fatasil Ambari, claimed to be the tallest in the northeast, became the main attraction for devotees.
Dr BR Ambedkar Youth Club at Fatasil Ambari GMC New Colony organised their 39th Ganesh Chaturthi this year, featuring a giant eco-friendly idol of Lord Ganesh. The idol, made without plastics and synthetic colours, signifies an environmentally friendly celebration.
Twelve artisans from Kolkata and Guwahati, led by city-based idol maker Sanjib Pal, prepared the idol in just 10 days, starting on Aug 27 and completing it by September 5.
Prakash Rao, general secretary of the club, told TOI, “Our aim was to build a 35-ft tall idol, but it turned out to be 40-ft after completion. Every year, we try to do something attractive for the devotees of the city, and this year was no different. The idol was built using only hay, clay, and bamboo. No plastic or chemical colours were used. From Saturday morning, over 4,000 devotees visited the pandal.”
“The celebration will continue for seven days until Sept 13. Each day, aarti will be performed at the pandal. On the last day of the celebration, the idol will be immersed with the help of a fire tender at the pandal itself, as the large idol cannot be taken to the riverbank for immersion,”
