On 25 January 1983, ITN's Keith Hatfield sat down to speak with Michael Fagan, the man who, on 9 July 1982, broke into Buckingham Palace and found his way into the bedroom of Queen Elizabeth II. In the incident's aftermath, Fagan was committed for psychiatric evaluation at Park Lane Hospital. Speaking to Fagan after his release from Park Lane, Hatfield asked him what his plans were for the future.

Fagan's intrusion into Buckingham Palace has been dramatised a number of times over the years, most famously in the fifth episode of season 4 of The Crown, in which Michael Fagan was portrayed by Tom Brooke.

Buckingham Palace security is once again in the spotlight as the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla approaches. On 2 May 2023, a man was arrested outside the palace after reportedly throwing shotgun cartridges through the palace gates. The detained man was found to be in possession of a knife but no gun. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police carried out a precautionary controlled explosion outside the palace after seizing the suspect's possessions.
