Sheikh Noorul Hassan, MLA of Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency and Leader of the Legislative Party, NPP, has reiterated his commitment to safeguard the constituency from recurring floods caused by the Iril River. His statement comes in the wake of the latest inundation on September 14, when a 600-foot stretch at Kshetri Awang Leikai was submerged.

Hassan accused former legislators from the INC and BJP of neglecting embankment works between 2012 and 2022. “From 2012 to 2022, not a single stone or soil was placed on the river bank. This prolonged negligence has left our constituency vulnerable, much like cancer caused by long neglect,” he said.

In contrast, the MLA highlighted his own efforts, including metalling the eastern bank of Iril in 2018, filling the western bank with soil in 2022 after his election, and reinforcing embankments again in 2024 following floods. On June 23 this year, he wrote to the Governor of Manipur seeking urgent intervention for strengthening the embankments of both Iril and Kongba rivers.

“Despite my limited resources, I mobilised machinery and placed soil to try and save my people from flood waters. But this is a task that requires government departments, not just one MLA,” he said, blaming departmental inaction for the repeated crises.

The legislator also condemned “negative propaganda” by his political opponents. He alleged that those who failed to act during their tenure are now spreading misinformation while avoiding responsibility when people suffer.

Hassan further pointed to the developmental works carried out under his leadership, stating that over 90% of roads in Kshetrigao are covered under the Urban Roads Concrete Projects. “I can challenge anyone to compare the road works and infrastructure development I have undertaken with that of previous MLAs from 2012 till date,” he asserted.

Reaffirming his commitment, the MLA assured residents that flood protection, infrastructure, and welfare initiatives will remain his top priorities. “I remain hopeful that with collective effort, we can fulfill the vision for Kshetrigao,” he said.
