Although millions of people participated in the independence struggle of Bangladesh, there has been confusion and debate from the beginning about who should be recognized as a "freedom fighter".

1. Original definition (1972):
Only those who were directly members of a fighting force were identified as 'freedom fighters'.

Government employees and pensioners were not covered by the allowance.

2. Political evolution:
Although the definition of the BNP government in 2002 was based on the definition of Jamuka Act 72, there was party influence.

After 2009, the Awami League government expanded the scope of freedom fighters, adding 8 new qualifications.

This included journalists, athletes, artists, doctors, and even professionals who contributed abroad as "freedom fighters".

3. Definition expansion in 2016 and later:
Going beyond a single definition, a person's "contributory role" was also recognized as a freedom fighter.

At the same time, oppressed women (heroes), officials of the Mujibnagar government and cultural workers were also included.

4. Political controversy and miss/disinformation:
A strong reaction was generated around the rumor that the names of national leaders including Bangabandhu and Tajuddin were omitted.

Basically, since the definition of 'freedom fighter' was used for party or political benefits, its neutrality and acceptability became questionable.
