HP Z220 Workstation Review

Hp's Z220 series is an impressive blend of performance and energy efficiency at a modest price. Harness the power of Intel's next generation processors for your personal or professional needs.

The z220 workstations comes in 2 different forms. The HP z220 Convertible mini tower or CMT. and the HP z220 small form factor or SFF.

The z220 CMT and SFF support Both Intel Xeon and Intel Core series processors, featuring a new micro-architecture in the 22nm process, providing greater compute and integrated graphics performance combined with low energy consumption.

Both the latest Quad Core Intel Xeon processor E3-1200 v2 series, and the 3rd generation Intel Core processors (such as the Intel Core i5 and i7 processors like the i3- 3240, i5-3570, and i7-3770) are supported.

Chips like the Intel Xeon e3-1290v2 quad core processer clock in at 3.7 Ghz and with Intel's Turbo Boost enabled, this chip can clock in at 4.1 GHz

The Intel® C216 platform controller hub chipset complements the HP Z220's core architecture.

Both forms of the Z220 support both DDR3 ECC and non-ECC unbuffered DIMMs, for up to 1600MHz speed. 2 channels with 2 DIMMs per channel are supported. (*speed dependent on configuration)

For storage options, the z220 CMT has 3 internal 3.5" drive bays and 3 external 5.25" bays.
Note that the third external 5.25" bay is not full depth; maximum depth is 6.7 inches.

And the z220 SFF has 1 internal 3.5-inch bay and 1 external 5.25-inch bay.

The z220 worskstations supports an Integrated SATA Controller with RAID 0,1. Either 4 ports 3 Gb/s or 2 ports 6 Gb/s

For expansion options, the motherboard on the CMT includes

1 PCIe Gen3 x16 slot
1 PCIe Gen2 x16 wired x4 slot
1 PCIe Gen2 x8 wired x4 slot
2 PCIe Gen 2 x1 slot
and 2 PCI slots.

Note the PCIe x8 connector is open ended, allowing a PCIe x16 card to be seated in the slot. However, this slot supports only half length cards. In the PCIe Gen3 x16 slot, if it is not being used for a graphics card, only cards certified as After Market Options for this platform are supported.

Expansion slots for the SFF are
1 PCIe Gen3 x16 slot,
1 PCIe Gen2 x4/x16 slot,
2 PCIe Gen2 x1,
and 1 PCI
All slots for the z220 SFF are low profile slots.

The z220 workstations can come with Intel HD Graphics with 1 DVI-I Single Link, depending on the cpu. But if your looking for high end graphic options, cards like the NVIDIA Quadro K4000 3GB Graphics or AMD FirePro W7000 4GB Graphics are supported in the z220 CMT.

And cards like the AMD FirePro™ V3900, NVIDIA Quadro 410 or NVIDIA Quadro 600 are supported in the z220 small form factor.

The z220 comes with 400-watt 90% efficient power supply or a 240-watt 90% efficient power supply. The 400w power supply is recommended if a video card is installed.

The z220 can run on a variety of operating systems. Those Operating systems include Windows 7, Windows 8, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation.
