Since I was a child, I’ve always felt drawn to sports. I tried freestyle wrestling, I tried rugby… but at thirteen I discovered arm wrestling. My older brother was already a Master of Sport in that discipline, so I decided to give it a try. It completely hooked me. I liked it because you don’t have to run, you don’t have to jump, and there isn’t that constant shortness of breath. Yes, your arms hurt and get tired to the limit, but it was my place.
However, I had another dream from a young age, inherited from my father: I wanted to be a truck driver. I wanted to have my own truck and travel the routes. At 19, I managed to buy my first Kamaz and started working with it. Many people get confused and think I’m a truck driver who one day decided to start competing. It’s the other way around: I was already a competitor who decided to get behind the wheel of a truck.
The road forges your character. It’s hard, solitary work. I make trips of more than 2,600 kilometers one way to the Chinese border, and the same distance back. Sometimes you’re driving, exhausted, thinking too much, and you feel like selling everything and never doing it again in your life. But then you sleep, you wake up, and the road calls you again.
Today, thanks to that effort, I have a fleet of ten trucks. And I’ll be honest with you: running the business, balancing the books, collecting money and paying for parts, drains me psychologically far more than any world arm wrestling championship.
