Similar to W. A. Mozart's famous interpretation of the same text, this modern setting paints a quiet image of modest serenity. It also strives to capture the intimacy of the text's perspective; for instance the usage of miserere mei ("have mercy on me") rather than the more common miserere nobis ("have mercy on us") makes this prayer particuarly personal. Flowing almost immediately from "...of the Virgin Mary" to "who having truly suffered," this musical interpretation suggests an element of Mary's suffering alongside that of Jesus. Occasional florid passages reminiscent of gregorian chant and containing haunting traces of ancient organum help to evokes an echo of the time in which this hymn was first written. In stark contrast, however, is the sudden emotional release at "may it be for us a foretaste of heaven" which forms the work's climax—a prominent textual shift from a basic narrative into the first person. What results is a musical setting that is uniquely and poignantly placed in emotional context, yet also struggling to remain pious and unassuming—much like this ancient prayer.
