The second movement of the string sextet composed by Erich Korngold when he was 17/18 years old (astonishingly), as arranged for wind decet.

The whole sextet is technically and musically very complex but this movement is perhaps the hardest to grasp on first hearing. Sometimes there seems to be almost no pulse - the flow speeds up momentarily only to slow down again and the time signature keeps changing, apparently without reference to the often overlapping and disjointed entries of the same figure in different parts. An agonised and angular solo opens the movement and returns later at several points in between, and gradually accompanied by, rich and beautiful harmony. In my imagination, somebody has suffered trauma; friends and family try, somewhat awkwardly but with love, to console them. The music of anguish appears in all registers, but in this transcription mostly represented by a double reed instrument. There is no complete resolution at the end, but a sense of calm, perhaps acceptance.
