In the late 1960s and 1970s, a group of scholars in the University of Birmingham revolutionized the study of media, culture and politics. Stuart Hall and others drew on a range of ideas from Marxism to Semiotics (a part of Linguistics) to focus on two key issues: meaning and power. This approach emphasizes "how" media texts mean (not just news, but also popular culture), how audiences interpret them, and what the political consequences of that are. "Race, Class, Gender," and many concerns that are part of the "common-sense" value-system of school and college students around the world today, can be traced back to British Cultural Studies. I talk about the basic ideas of this approach, and one famous study in this tradition, the Cosby Show reception analysis conducted by Professors Sut Jhally and Justin Lewis (in whose "parampara" I was blessed to be educated).
