El Ateneo Grand Splendid Bookshop, the 'world's most beautiful bookstore", Santa Fe Avenue, Buenos Aires
El Ateneo Grand Splendid encabeza varios récords: es la librería más grande de Sudamérica, fue elegida por el diario británico The Guardian como la segunda mejor librería del mundo, y la revista estadounidense National Geographic la destacó como la más linda.
Cientos de personas la recorren cada día y no dejan de maravillarse con el espectáculo que los rodea. Porque si bien se puede comprar música, películas y libros, entrar a este lugar es una experiencia por sí misma.
La librería fue inaugurada el 4 de diciembre de 2000 pero el edificio conserva el antiguo esplendor y elegancia de principios de siglo XX, cuando era el teatro Grand Splendid: vas a encontrar sus barandas originales, la decoración intacta y una imponente cúpula con frescos, de 20 metros de diámetro. Siamo nel cuore di Buenos Aires. Questo splendido edificio, al numero 1860 di Santa Fe Avenue, è una delle librerie più spettacolari al mondo: El Ateneo Gran Splendid. In origine era un teatro, lo storico “Teatro Gran Splendid”, costruito da un uomo d’affari di nome Mordechai David Glücksmann, noto anche per essere stato un pioniere nell’industria musicale e cinematografica argentina. Alla fine degli anni ’20 il teatro fu trasformato in un cinema e diventò subito famoso perché ospitò le proiezioni dei primi film sonori in Argentina. Per tutto il XX secolo costituì un punto di riferimento culturale a Buenos Aires. Nel 2000 infine il proprietario della casa editrice e della catena di librerie argentine “Yenny – El Ateneo” rilevò l’immobile, affidandone il restauro all’architetto Fernando Manzone, che lo trasformò in una delle librerie più maestose del mondo. Sono stati mantenuti tutti gli arredi e gli elementi di design dell’ex teatro: ancora oggi entrando si respira l’eleganza e la storia di questo luogo. Il bellissimo soffitto con gli affreschi e la meravigliosa cupola decorata dall’artista italo-argentino Nazareno Orlandi. Sono state perfino conservate le tende di velluto rosso. A former theatre, the Grand Splendid is one of the world's most beautiful bookstore According to British newspaper The Guardian, El Ateneo Grand Splendid is the second best bookstore in the world. It preserves the splendour and elegance of the former Gran Splendid theatre/cinema, which was designed by architects Peró and Torres Armengol. Located in the Recoleta neighbourhood, El Grand Spendid theatre opened in 1919 and immediately became a beacon of Porteño culture, hosting ballet, opera, and the first "talkies" shown in Buenos Aires. The national Odeon record label - now owned by EMI - was based here, and singers such as Carlos Gardel recorded on the premises. The venue even gave birth to its own radio station, LR4 Radio Splendid, which began transmitting from the building in 1923.
The venue was converted into a bookstore in the year 2000, beautifully preserving the original decoration, including the dome, which was painted with frescoes by Italian Nazareno Orlandi. The store stocks around 120,000 books and there is a bar on what was the stage area of the theatre, where you can drink a coffee while reading. There are comfy chairs around the shop, making browsing for books here a real pleasure. The basement is dedicated to children's books, and the upper floor is used for exhibitions and displays.
