Today, we spotlight one of the early pioneers of plastic surgery, Dr. Varaztad Kazanjian. To give a brief background, he was one of the founding fathers of modern day plastic surgery and helped restore the lives of wounded soldiers during World War I as part of the Harvard Dental Unit. Some of the principles and innovative techniques he developed on the Western Front are key aspects of plastic surgery today. He lived in the time of the Armenian Genocide that took place on April 24, 1915 and resulted in the massacre of 1.5 million souls by the Ottoman Turks. Dr. Kazanjian's story is one of perseverance during difficult times and dedication to his patients. A compassionate and humble man, he rose to become one of the true giants in the burgeoning field of plastic surgery at the turn of the 20th century.
