BBS Style 5(RC090) Rebuild, Start To Finish - A Short Film By Chromatic

This was a lot of fun. Like a super large amount of fun. Rebuilding these BBS Style 5 wheels wasn’t something that was entirely necessary because as you’ll see, they weren’t in terrible condition by any means. However I wanted to create something special and unique for my car. This process was spread over a number of days and countless hours trying to get them as nice as I could with my little knowledge of doing this. I am super happy with how they turned out and I hope you guys will enjoy watching the process.

First off the wheel faces were split from the barrel so that they could be powder coated and the bases could be properly stripped and cleaned. I didn’t love the idea of not being able to powder coat the OEM Style 5 centre cap due to it being plastic. So I opted for the EWheelWorks Waffle Conversion so that they could be colour matched and I could run hex caps. The faces and waffles were sent out to be powder coated in an OEM BMW Silver. Next up I cleaned the barrels, the goal wasn’t perfection, I basically just wanted a flush service to remount the face to. After that I applied aircraft remover to the lips in order to strip the clear coat. Style 5’s come with a factory clear coat on the lips, which really restricts your ability to polish them to a desired finish. Once the clear coat was gone I sanded them with 600, 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000 grit sandpaper. Followed by a polish. At this point the faces had come back from powder coating and I was able to rebuild the wheels. New gold hardware, a little blue thread locker and some BBS valve stems finished the look.
