"Step back, doors closing..."

The Yellow Line opened in 1983 as the fourth route in the DC Metro system, and is easily the most dynamic. It's seen various northern termini over the years, most recently interlining with the Green Line from Greenbelt before scaling down to Mount Vernon Square in 2023. Mostly a straight shoot south, the Yellow Line is the only route that starts in Washington, DC, and is also the only route that does not enter Maryland. It crosses the Charles R. Fenwick Bridge over the Potomac River as part of the 14th Street Bridge system, giving a clear shot of planes making the famous Runway 19 visual approach into DCA. The southern terminus, Huntington, is built into a hill, and hosts one of the few inclined elevators in the United States. All in all, the Yellow Line boasts a total of 13 stops, taking just half an hour to travel end-to-end.

The Metrorail service was launched in 1976 by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), with roots going back to the 1950s. Since then, it's become the second-largest transit rail transit system in America after the New York City Subway. Existing rail cars include the aluminum-skinned 2000/3000 (Breda) and 6000 Series (Alstom), as well as the stainless steel 7000 Series (Kawasaki), with the 8000 Series (Hitachi) set to enter service in 2025. The Yellow Line spans just 11 miles while sharing nearly its entire route with either the Green or the Blue Line. Trains operate in 6- and 8-car sets, with speeds topping out around 60 miles per hour.

Special thanks to the entire Metro staff.
