When Mr Vasudev Shetty moved from Mangalore to Hubli to begin Gurudatta Bhavan in 1958, he may not have imagined that in times to come his eatery would become one of the most popular food destinations in this bustling commercial hub. Be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, Gurudatta Bhavan seems to draw in the denizens of Hubballi in numbers for its tasty fare that blends Mangalorean culinary style with influences of the land. I pop in for breakfast one morning to savour their sought-after puri kurma amongst other dishes, and also meet the family behind this 63-year-old restaurant.
