When Leopold Stokowski began conducting internationally in the early 1950s, having had a career based almost exclusively in America since 1909, he adopted one specific policy. This was wherever possible to conduct music of the country he was visiting. Examples include an all-Sibelius concert in Helsinki in 1953 with the composer present in the audience. A few years later on a visit to Paris, his programme included works by Ravel, Debussy and Ibert, while a Copenhagen concert in 1967 found Stokowski conducting Nielsen's 2nd Symphony. His visits to the UK also saw him championing many British works and in 1957, he conducted the recent 8th Symphony of Ralph Vaughan Williams with the composer in the Royal Box.

In 1961, he conducted two concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Edinburgh Festival. The first was a performance of Schoenberg's "Gurrelieder" followed two days later by a concert featuring a work by Michael Tippett, another living composer who was also in the audience. Indeed, at the conclusion of his Concerto for Double String Orchestra, Tippett rushed onto the stage and kissed the maestro's hands! ... The work is included in a new 6CD Set of 'BBC Legends' broadcasts issued by ICA Classics. In this video we hear just the closing moments of the Concerto's finale as a 'taster' of the complete performance.
