"ARE YOU WASHED IN THE BLOOD?"

This universally known hymn “Are you washed in the blood” was penned and composed by Elisha Albright Hoffman (1839-1929), a minister in the Evangelical Church almost 150 years ago. This song has been included repeatedly as one of the great hymns to be used in church services by various collection even to this 21st century. The impacts of this hymn can also be understood by the facts that it has been translated in Nepali language and is one of the most sang hymn in Nepali speaking Christian community. The translated hymn has been included in the hymn number 209 in official Nepali Christian Hymns Book.

This song enumerates the blessings of being washed in the blood of Jesus Christ. Each Stanza has given deep insightful message to the listeners.

I. Stanza 1 refers to receiving the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus in our life. We come to Jesus to have our sins washed away as he is the one sent by God to save the sinful mankind. Ephesians 5:25-27 tells that Jesus alone has power to cleanse us and this is due to the grace of our Almighty God (Titus 3:5-7).

II. Stanza 2 refers to having fellowship with the Savior in day to day living and walking side by side with him (1 John 1:7) which has been possible due our cleansing by the blood of Jesus (Ephesians 2: 13-18).

III. Stanza 3 refers to being made ready for the returning back of the Lord in pure and white robes by the cleansing power of blood of Jesus (Revelations 7: 13-14) and be ready for the mansions that Jesus is preparing for His people (John 14:1-3).

IV. Stanza 4 refers to laying aside the garments that are stained with sin so that they can be washed by His blood (Ephesians 4:22-24) and remind us that the fountain of his blood is available for unclean soul (Zechariah 13:1).

Throughout all these long 150 years, this song has been most popular and effective gospel hymn to invite people to Jesus and receive the cleansing of his mighty blood. At the end, we would like to ask each one of you the same question the chorus of this hymn has asked.
